SINUS HEADACHE OR SINUSITIS
Sinusitis is inflammation (swelling) of the lining of the sinuses, caused by a viral or bacterial infection. The sinuses are small, air-filled cavities behind our cheekbones and forehead
Sinusitis typically causes a high temperature, pain and tenderness in the face, and a blocked or runny nose . It is a common condition and can affect people of any age.
There are Four pairs of sinuses in our head:
A. Frontal sinus – two sinuses behind our forehead.
B. Ethmoid sinus- two at either side of the bridge of our nose.
C. Sphenoid sinus- two behind our eyes.
D. Maxillary sinus -two behind our cheekbones.
sinuses open up into the cavity of your nose and help control the temperature and water content of the air reaching your lungs. Usually, the mucus naturally produced by your sinuses drains into your nose through small channels. These channels can become blocked when the sinuses are infected and inflamed. It is the maxillary sinuses (the largest ones behind the cheekbones) that are most commonly affected.
Prevention for Sinusitis:
a. Reduce exposure to allergens.
b. Improve household ventilation by opening windows whenever possible.
c. Sleep with head of the bed elevated. This promotes sinus drainage.
d. Use decongestants with caution.
e. Avoid air pollutions (such as smoke) that irritate the nose.
f. Eat a balance diet and exercise.
g. Minimize exposure to persons with known infections.
